Friday Thoughts

– Wawa subs are one of the greatest things on this planet.

– After Saturday, my baby will not be the size of an otter anymore, but she’ll always be a wiggly otter to me and I can’t wait to see what her next animal size on my app is.

– I took this photo to document that this is the longest my nails will ever be, naturally. Cheers to pre-natal vitamins. My right hand has suffered some nail casualties the past couple days, but they’ll grow back. They take a little more damage than my left.

– I’m totally fine with nail polish on my toenails, but nail polish on my fingers has been weirding me out the last few months. I’m not sure if it’s a pregnancy thing or if this is just my life now. Nail polish-free and happy.

– I really, really want dog shoes. I keep telling myself I don’t NEED dog shoes, but guys…the dogs.

 – One good thing about summer is that sometimes you get free veggies. I love that people grow their own vegetables, because it means they start handing them out like candy if they have extra. My coworker gave me a bag full and I am so appreciative of anyone who grows and gifts veggies.

– I slept in an extra hour yesterday because I had a doctor’s appointment and the extra hour is amazing. 6:30 AM never felt so good.

– Although we haven’t decided officially on a baby name, yet, baby does have many nicknames. My mom refers to her as the Ninja Beast, which I couldn’t agree with more.

– I told the medical receptionist that any time for next visit was fine, because my last day of work is August 7th. She asked me if it was because my doctor put me on leave, and I said nope. This was decided by me. I’ve been working in a temporary status, so I had a little wiggle room as to when I could leave. This way, Greg and I will both be off for a little bit before baby. Her due date is September 24th, although you never know when she’ll actually appear.

– I started using this moisturizer and I really like it. It’s kind of weird at first, because it uses zinc as the sunscreen so it goes on a little thick, but it evens out easily and my skin has actually looked brighter and smoother. It also makes me feel better about having daily sun protection from this intense heat, lately.

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

P.S. I also did a minor update to my sidebar and added a favorite posts page, so if you notice anything wonky let me know. That goes for anything on my blog, anytime!

31 Weeks: Bumpdates

This week is starting out as a really hot one! I can’t believe we are moving along at 31 weeks, and I also can’t wait for it to cool down outside.

Baby ninja moves: Baby is trying to expand her surroundings. This morning, I woke up at 2:30 AM to pee and then I was wide awake and couldn’t fall back asleep. I lay in bed looking at baby names on my phone and was thinking how I wished she would give me a little kick to let me know she’s there.

She then proceeded to have a dance party in my belly, which does not help with sleep. I fell back asleep around 3:15 and then woke up at 5:15 wishing I could stay in bed, but my alarm called. I love her dance parties, though.

Baby size: She feels like a wiggly otter this week!

Exploring: MommyCon. I went to MommyCon in DC last weekend, which was quite an event. I don’t know if I would do it again, although maybe if it was in another location. It’s a big convention that focuses on cloth diapers (which I’m interested in) and baby-wearing.

Also, sob story: I had a snack mid-morning and then during the scheduled lunch break, I took a (super hot) walk to Chipotle and ordered a bowl. Then I realized I wasn’t that hungry and I was too full to finish more than half my bowl. So I threw away half a bowl of Chipotle, which is not cool. Then, on my way home about three hours later, I was ravenously hungry. Luckily, I packed a snack.

The Con was not bad and I learned a little and got lots of vendor names to check out online, but it was really crowded and I dislike driving in downtown DC. I bought a few cool nursing infinity scarves that I love:

Craving: Watermelon and brownies! I simply had to have a watermelon the night I got back from DC, so I stopped at a farmer’s market and picked one up. Then I really wanted homemade brownies, so I cooked some up and am enjoying them one by one, since I stuck them in the freezer to make them last this week. Not sure how long they will actually last at this point, but they are delicious.

Good news! We found out Greg should get home soon, and I put in my two weeks notice at work to be able to enjoy some time at home and get some things done.

Random Thoughts Vol. 1

– Sometimes I drive past those shopping cart racks in the parking lot that only take up half a space, and I think, “I could fit in that.” But then I would be blocking the cart rack and someone would probably try to take out my compact car (I do not have a Smart Car; I have a Scion IQ which is a similar size).

– I drive really slow and honestly I don’t think about it. This woman started honking madly at me and flew up beside me at a red light screaming and gesticulating wildly. I was probably going about 38 in a 35 mph zone, and this clearly drove her to the brink of madness. I couldn’t hear her talking and could only see her mouth moving, so I shrugged and gave her the thumbs up. I also drive 60 on our 55 mph interstate… crazy.

– I bought a sun shade to put in the windshield of my car. It’s one of those giant foldy ones, so I unfolded it and used it once. I was then unable to fold it back into its little holder, so I left it folded in half and huge in the back of my car for a couple weeks before a coworker rode with me and folded it back for me. I’m not going to unfold it again and it’s going in Greg’s car.

– I have rarely had an angry hormonal day, but I had one the other week when I was hangry and my friend took forever getting to my apartment to meet me for dinner. He was so late that by the time we got to the restaurant to eat, he could only stay for 15 minutes before he had to leave for work and then I had to finish eating on my own. I was not happy that day.

– I had a strong craving for strawberry pie the other day, and I stopped at the store to get some strawberries and whip cream. I got the strawberries, but the whip cream ingredients freaked me out. The main ingredients were water, hydrogenated oil, and corn syrup. I found some coconut whip cream at Whole Foods the next day with non weird ingredients and it’s delicious.

– I only just now gave in and ordered maternity underwear. I send my desperate hopes that it gets here soon.

– I watched all of Jessica Jones season one last weekend, and I loved it. Not sure what to fill the David Tennant sized hole in my TV life with now.

– I’ll probably have to fill it with the five books I currently have checked out from the library.

What are you watching/reading, lately?

30 Weeks: Weekend Bumpdates

I skipped a week, woops. Last week was the end of my 11-days straight work week, so I was kind of pooped. It was finished off with a three-day weekend, though, which is always fantastic.

These were both taken the same day, but I had to release the belly from the skirt since it feels better when it’s free and wild and unconstricted. The shorts are from Target and have been awesome. I can roll the belly covering part down when I don’t want anything on it.

This week I hit 30 weeks, which is surprising to me, being less than 10 weeks away from my due date. I still have a lot of stuff to do, but some of it I’m waiting on Greg to get back for (like pick a name…no big deal right, no need to freak out! I may freak out a tiny bit, but I do know what I like and have told him, just need to decide for sure when he gets here).

Last week at my doctor’s office, my OB asked me if people said anything about my bump being small and I told her a lot of people have mentioned it. I do not mind at all, and in my uniform people might not be able to tell. She said I have a really long torso, so I think baby has some room to move around in there.

I roll out of bed like a turtle when I get up to go pee at night, but besides that, the belly is a slightly compact size and hasn’t been causing me too much back pain or anything.

Baby is growing lots in this trimester:

Workouts are sporadic and I do them whenever I am feeling good and/or have the time. Today, I went for a walk and it went really well – no ab muscle pain this time, which has been off and on. Although it is HOT here and I didn’t stay out too long.

Every time I go for a walk, I admit I think of one of my favorite Buffy moments. I know there are other BtVS fans. I love Spike and Buffy.

I had a great accidental library haul the other day. I went in to drop off a book and try to find one more while I was waiting for one I stumbled upon all these. I’m reading Daughter of Smoke & Bone right now, and will hold my thoughts until the end but I will say I am really into it.

I dyed my hair this weekend, because my color seemed really golden to me and I wasn’t feeling the light color, anymore. I went for a darker, chocolate shade with Naturtint in light chestnut brown and really like it so far.

I had a fabulously relaxing and much-needed weekend, and I hope you’re off to a good week.

What I’ve Been Reading

This is one of my favorite days of the month, because it makes me want to read all the books everyone’s been recommending. I actually read a few this month that had been recommended by others.

Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler – 3.5 stars
I liked this, even though I didn’t realize when I checked it out that it switched perspectives between characters. I usually have trouble staying interested when books do that. I liked most of the characters, and I enjoyed Beth’s perspective the most. It was a good book about friendships, love, and small towns.

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty – 4 stars
This was the first book I’ve read by this author, and I liked it. I’m not usually a fan of chick lit type literature, or whatever you would call this genre, but since it has been recommended so many times, I gave it a try. It didn’t have me riveted the whole time, but I enjoyed it enough I may try another of her books some time. It was an interesting look at characters’ stories interweaving with each other.

The Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse – 3 stars
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was kind of meh on this one, because it never really took off. It seemed like it would be about the wars between Neverland and the real world, but there wasn’t much of it going on and it felt like could have been a series. Instead, it was one book and I don’t think it ever got a foothold for me, because the plot was a little lacking.

The Girl in 6E by A.R. Torre – 3.5 stars
This is a thriller about a girl who webcams full time from her apartment, but also is secretly hiding her urge to murder. It’s kind of like Dexter, except with lots more sexual descriptions and if Dexter had the killing skills of a bunny rabbit. She’s like a hamster that really wants to eat you, but is clearly lacking the size. The main character accidentally uncovers a crime and attempts to stop it. It wasn’t the best thriller I’ve read, but it was a quick read if you don’t mind lots of sexy cam descriptions.

You by Caroline Kepnes – 3 stars
I have heard about this book so many times, but it also wasn’t what I expected by the time I finally read it. I actually expected it to be MORE graphic from the reactions I had read of it. It was more of a slow creepy feeling. I thought the author did a good job with Joe’s personality and describing his thoughts, but at the same time I wasn’t really surprised by much in the story.

I wasn’t wow-ed by anything I read this month, but I didn’t read anything that was terrible. I’m currently reading a book that I’m really enjoying, so next month may bring some books I love.

As always, feel free to add me as a friend on Goodreads so I can see what other people are up to throughout the month!

Friday Favorites

I would be happier if it was next Friday, since that’s the next time I am off, but I will take what I can get. Here’s hoping it gets less crazy hot this weekend!

Favorite Conditioner:
I picked up this based sheerly off smell, and it smells even more majestic once it is in my hair. If you see it on the shelf, inhale it; it is amazing.

Favorite Eyeliner:
My old Pixi eyeliner from Target was running a bit dry, so I decided to splurge and get a Kat Von D liner from Sephora. It’s so smooth, I love it. It’s also a cruelty-free brand.

Favorite Recipe:
I struggle to find a use for my vegan protein powder, even though I need lots and lots of protein right now. I am not a smoothie person most mornings. I usually want some almond butter toast or oatmeal. But on the weekends, when I have a little extra time, I make vegan protein pancakes, and they are pretty delicious. Also, it only takes a few ingredients (I use almond milk instead of water, because I like milk in pancakes). Once you go maple, you never go back to the regular syrup.

Favorite Purchase:
Our old dish rack was from IKEA, and it was great for a while but had started to rust, and I don’t want to dry my dishes on a rusty rack. We had a bamboo rack before which lasted for a while, so I’m giving it another shot and got this one. It’s actually great at holding almost anything so far. We have a very limited space on our counter, so it can be hard to find a good compact one.

Favorite Moment:
When Greg sent me baby stuff. He knows me so well.

Favorite Accomplishment:
Cleaning things and going through stuff in the garage and underneath the bed last weekend. Now I have a small bag of donation stuff, and I was able to get this tub half-empty. There’s still more to go and I am trying to make room everywhere, but every little bit helps.

Favorite Pregnancy Moment:
How I feel when anyone comments on my size. Usually, it’s disbelief when I tell them I am 7 months along.

Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

28 Weeks: Bumpdates

We are experiencing a heat wave and it makes me wish I could create a pillow fort underneath my desk and take a nap. I would love to take my Snoogle pillow to work and wrap up in it.

The third trimester has brought a little more discomfort, but the same otherwise so far. This is basically me sitting in my chair at work.

Then I go home and go to bed with my Snoogle.

Baby is growing bigger; this week she’s an echidna.

She feels more like a baby gazelle or lemur the way she moves.

Greg sent a bunch of baby items in the mail. I love them all, and I can’t wait till we can pick out more stuff together.

Also, our baby’s alternate name, from two Doctor Who loving parents:

This is how baby feels every time I try to go for a walk.

It’s a big nope. I have the same ab/muscle pain every time I walk for any distance, which grows with intensity until I am walking slower than a turtle’s pace. Maybe prenatal yoga will be an option.

I baked all the cookies the past week. I have so many cookies in my house right now. I stuck the extra in the freezer for every day cookie monster moments.

These are from my favorite vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe. I usually use half coconut oil, half vegetable oil, instead of all coconut oil and I don’t notice any coconut-y flavor.
